Why vote?

[livejournal.com profile] the_magician pointed out in a comment on my last post:

"No. I haven't (voted for the Pegasus). Just thought there should be at least one comment here from someone who hasn't.

To be fair I'd want to spend some time listening to all the entries and then making an informed choice, otherwise it's just a popularity contest based on who I know and who has performed on this side of the Atlantic.

I am really happy that someone has said this out loud. :) My answer to him was:

This is exactly what we would like every single person who votes to do.

It's why there's a sound file for each Nominee on the site. It's why we cooperate every year with Filk Radio to broadcast as many of the full songs as we can get permission for. It's why we strive to ensure that the lyrics to every song, and a sample of the work for every Writer/Composer and Performer is up and on the site. It's why we are continually trying to find better ways to give people access to the Nominated material so that they can make informed decisions.

Thanks, Magician. :) I feel that this is why many people vote at OVFF, because they can hear the songs performed live at the Nominees concert on Friday night.

And, honestly, it's the 'popularity contest' issue of this Award that is the most difficult to change. Yes, there have been a lot of people out there who will only vote for who they like, not necessarily who (upon reflection) they feel is best. I like to feel that this is changing.

Why? Well, in the past, people would vote for who they knew simply because they had no other way to actually hear all the songs that were Nominated. It really was a popularity contest. However, by making recordings available, the quality (and number!) of Nominations and Final Ballots has increased tenfold.

Ok, Steve shut up now. :) I really hadn't intended to make Yet Another Pegasus Post, because there's really been enough out there... and I'm not the Evangelista any longer. I just maintain the website, now. The rest is up to [livejournal.com profile] catalana. Poor woman.

Treat her kindly, ok? :)

Yesterday I performed surgery on a very important piece of personal tech.

I replaced the battery on my Palm Tungsten E2.

The patient survived, and I didn't even crack the case!

Go me!
